Let us introduce you to Westminster Housing Society starting with our aims and objectives.

Westminster Housing Society was incorporated on September 16, 1993. It is also a registered charity. The object of the corporation is to provide good quality housing to lower income tenants at rental rates they can afford, and at the same time to rehabilitate older housing stock, primarily in the West Broadway area of Winnipeg, and improve the neighbourhood.

A brief history

In 1993 Westminster Housing Society constructed a 12-unit townhouse development located at 165 Maryland Street. Over the next 16 years Westminster Housing has acquired and rehabilitated 17 large older houses and converted them into duplexes (4), triplexes (10), and quadruplexes (3), depending on the size of the building. In addition a very large fire damaged rooming house was converted into a small appartment building. Every rehab project involves substantial upgrading, including new plumbing and electrical systems, new windows and doors, insulation to higher standards, new interior walls, and redecorating inside and out. Westminster Housing also constructed 2 new duplexes of modern design and new construction methods, and wheelchair accessible. The townhouse units are designed for families with from 2 to 5 children. The other units vary in size and design, from 3 bedrooms to bachelor units. Most are designed for a single person, a couple, or a single person with a child.

Westminster Housing Society continues a program of gradual expansion. A quadraplex located at 762 Broadway Avenue will be completed during the course of 2010. It is hoped that two other projects will be underway in 2010, involving the new construction of a small apartment building in West Broadway, and a new 4 unit rehab project in the Spence Neighbourhood.

...to provide good quality housing to lower income tenants at rental rates they can afford.
